Pictured here is an old Servile refrigerator from the 50's. It runs on gas (not sure what kind) and has been recalled. The Servile was recalled supposedly because of carbon monoxide emissions. But old timers tell me it was recalled because it was made too well and never broke down. In our consumer based society there is no room for inventions that do not need repaired or replaced. Planned obsolescence and perceived obsolescence fuel our economy (see The Story of Stuff to the right of this blog in my favorites). These old gas refrigerators are coveted for hunting lodges and places that there is not electricity. In a peak oil crisis when the power grid is down for long periods of time these may come back in style...depending on if there are pockets of fuel to be had. I will be selling this vintage item this summer on Craigs list or Ebay.
