As more vessels are taken over by Somalia pirates this week, it becomes clear that the US is going to have to stop them. I think it is important to understand the other side of this story. Imagine if you saw ships invading your waters dumping waste and fishing without permit or permission. These guys believe they are like our Coast Guard. Here is an excerpt from New York Times last year.
In the eyes of the world, the pirates had been misunderstood. “We don’t consider ourselves sea bandits,” he said. “We consider sea bandits those who illegally fish in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas. We are simply patrolling our seas. Think of us like a coast guard.” Here is the link
