Mural Dispute

Blogroll Me!

HILLIARD, Ohio — An Ohio homeowner is fighting zoning officials who say the giant sunflower painted on her garage is too colorful.

Kelley Daniel was told by the city planner in the Columbus suburb of Hilliard that her mural violates guidelines which say buildings in her neighborhood must look simple and subdued and have no more than two colors. Daniel, who has artistic training, used bright yellow, orange, blue and green in July to create a 15-foot tall sunflower, which she found out later is Hilliard's official flower. She was initially looking to improve her barn-red garage but now calls her mural educational.

Planner John Talentino says the painting is "well-done" but that's not the issue.

Daniel is appealing. She faces a possible fine of up to $150 a day.
